BEST DAY IN PARIS

May 28, 2010

Today was another early day preceded by a late, sleepless night. We met in the lobby at 8am so that we could leave and get to Versailles before the crowds rushed in. We got there and decided to get a tour so that we could learn a bit about the history of Versailles and get to go through rooms that are not normally shown to the public (VIP status for Utah State students!!). This tour was a DISASTER! None of us spoke up quick enough so we got a French tour guide. I understand that I am here to better my French, but this guy was ridiculous! Even Jake, who speaks French fluently, was having trouble.

IT WAS AMAZING. This was my favorite place in all of Paris. It was so green. There were tons of flowers and plants everywhere. It was so peaceful there were 3 little cottages surrounding a small pond. There were Lilly pads, fish, and even a little lighthouse. I could live here forever! Then we headed back to the hotel, got a delicious crepe and called it a night! It was such a fantastic day! I was so happy to finally have a day where we didn’t rush through places. I can’t wait to go back to Versailles…but no tour guide for me next time!!

This small, stinky French man named Jean Luc would get literally 5 inches from your face while asking you a question. He must have known that we all aren’t very good at French. I'm sure that he was getting a kick out of watching us trying to scramble for a position in the back of the group or seeing us stare at the floor in order to avoid eye contact. It was really cool though because we got to see the Opera House in Versailles. It was so beautiful! It was so big that it took 3,000 candles to light the room. It was beautiful. Thankfully this was the end of our horrific tour. It was so horrible yet comical at the same time…words cant describe it. It’s one of those “you had to be there” type moments.
Then we headed through the rooms that we didn’t see on our tour. My favorite room was the Hall of Mirrors.

It was amazing! One side of the room has these big open windows that let in tons of light, the other side of the room was covered in huge mirrors. The chandeliers were so beautiful as well. I wish that I could have seen the room without so many people there.
But my favorite part of Versailles was the gardens. We wanted to go down into the gardens, but after so much walking we didn’t want to walk them. Since there were 7 of us in out little group we decided to group together with some Australians and Texans to make a group big enough to get the discounted group rate…we thought it was clever. Lol We took the little tram/golf cart thing to Marie Antoinette’s small residence on the property. After walking through the big palace, this little house was so bare! As we were leaving we saw a sign pointing some people towards a small, tiny village that Marie Antoinette had constructed on some land she was given as a gift. (Called the Hameau de la Reine.)

After about and hour and a half at least in the little village, we decided to head back into Paris. We decided to all take a small nap and then take a Seine boat down to the Eiffel Tower. The boat ride was so nice! We got on at the last possible moment (9:30 pm) and rode around for about an hour before getting to the Eiffel Tower. It was so nice to just sit and be able to observe Paris. By the time we got to the Eiffel Tower it was dark, so we waited around until it was time for it to sparkle. (At this time Ali pointed out that because the tower was so sparkly “It’s like the new Edward!” If you haven’t seen or read the twilight series, the vampires sparkle in the sun.)
